Aims and Objectives:
- to introduce and practice vocabulary;
- to develop basic skills;
- to develop cultural awareness and socio-cultural competence;
Equipment: pupils’ books, topical pictures; cards with tasks; computers; a tape recorder; whiteboard /screen/.
The Procedure of the lesson
I. Introduction.
1. Greeting. /Slide 1: “Good Morning!”/ Song “Good Morning”.
T. – Good morning!
Ps. – Good morning!
T. – How are you?
Ps. – Fine, thank you!
T. – Dear pupils, I am glad to see you at our English lesson.
Ps. – We are glad to see you too.
T. – We have some guests today, let’s greet them!
Ps. – Good morning, dear teachers,
Good morning, how are you?
We are very happy
To say “hallo” to you!
T. – Thank you, take your seats, please. And before we start our lesson, take the faces in front of you. /On the cards HO1/ If you feel great! – draw a smile;
If you feel neither great nor bad – draw a face without a smile; and
If you are sad and unhappy, draw a sad face. /Slide 2/
Now show me your faces, please. Well, I see that some of you are not happy, but I’m sure your mood will change to the end of our lesson. (…everybody is happy so we can start the lesson).
And we’ll begin it with warming – up.
2. Phonetic warm – up. /Slide 3/.
T. – Let’s practice our tongues. Look at the screen – here are some sounds and words. Listen to the correct pronunciation and repeat after me. /Slide 4/
Sounds: /|/ - build, fish, sister, bridge;
/dƷ/ - passengers, large, porridge;
/w/ - wash, way, wood, with, where, will;
/ɔ: / - falling, your, walk;
T. - Well done! We’ll need these words a bit later. Now it’s time to know the topic of our lesson. I’d like you to guess it. You can see the puzzle on the screen. Find the words there.

T. – Who wants to do this task at the white board? /Pupils do the task/
T. – Excellent! Sit down, and you, friends, check on your answers. Can you guess the topic now?
Ps. – Is it “city”? Maybe topic is “London?”
T. – Yes, you are right. But: What is London?
Ps.
- London is the capital of the United Kingdom.
- London is the capital of England too.
- It’s situated on the River Thames.
T. – OK! But full name of today’s lesson is “With a Map Around London’. /Slide 7/ And our tasks are:
- to talk about places to visit in London;
- to learn new words;
- to read and write;
- to do exercises;
- to be active;
T. – Open your copy- books, write down the date and today lesson’s topic. /Slide 8/ Who is on duty today? What was your home task?
Ps. – Our home task was to learn famous places and some facts about London. And write sentences about the places of ex. 1 p. 120.
3. Homework checking. /Slide 9/
T. – Now what do you know about London?
P1. – This city is very beautiful and old. It is full of cinemas, theatres, museums and art galleries. Tourists come here to visit Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge and many other places of interest.
P2. – It is a great city with wonderful parks and gardens. In one of them, Regent’s Park, we can watch different animals because this is the place where London Zoo is situated.
P3. – The most famous bridge in London is Tower Bridge. It is a busy and vital crossing of the River Thames. People can have a nice walk along it and enjoy the view of the city from it. The bridge is amazing and old; it is more than 100 years old.
P4. – I know that Big Ban is the name of clock in the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament. It’s a famous symbol of London.
T. – Thanks a lot, dear pupils, for your exciting work. Now, friends, close your eyes and imagine that you are tourists and now you are visiting London. What places of interest are you going to visit? /Slide 10. I am going to visit …/
T. – Have you imagined? Open your eyes and make up your sentences, say them and after that write down in your copy- books.

II. Main part. /Slide 11/
1. Listening.
T. – Let’s join up English children who also want to see the famous places and ARE GOING to take tour with a guide on a red double-decker bus. The tour starts from the center of London and all tourists are going to the bus stop. We will listen to the directions how to get there, but first: look at the screen and remember some words we need.
Pre- listening. /Slide 12. Directions/
- Turn left ; - go along; - go out of; - on the right;
- Turn right; - go into; - go round; - on the left.
T. – Now, look at the map, listen to the direction for Kim and find the way to the bus stop.

T. – Have you gone to the bus stop? Are you all ready for the tour? I think you are very tide now so it is time to rest! Let’s sing a song “London Bridge”.

T. – Let’s go on. To make our trip we need a map of London. /Slide 14. SB Ex. 1 p. 123/ Open your books page 123 and look at the map. Can you see the River Thames?
2. Speaking.
- Can you find the Houses of Parliament? Where is it?
- What is next to it?
- Can you find Trafalgar Square? What is in the center of this square?
- Do you know what building is behind the Nelson’s Column?

T. – Now take the cards with task, look at the map and complete the sentences with prepositions: next to, between, at the corner, behind, not far from.

T. – Now, friends, we have another task and we are going to use the computers. Some of you will have a small task there; others will do tasks on the cards; after finishing you must know a place where you meet your friend. Good luck!
